the appellation embraces the villages of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echezeaux. The soils are limestone with varying amounts of clay on reasonably steep inclines which provide for efficient drainage. Pinot noir is the only permitted varietal. Vosne-Romanée is the privileged home of some of the most prestigious wines in the world, boasting seven great growths: Romanée-Conti, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux, Romanée, La Tâche and Richebourg.

the most predominant character trait here is the silkiness of the wines with subtle tannins and acidity. The wines are fleshy with excellent length. On the palate, they are powerful yet epitomise delicacy, lacking any form of aggressiveness. They display fragrances of cherry, strawberry, undergrowth, blackcurrant, boxwood and spices with notes of mint and bitter almond. They pair with pheasant paté, roast hare, venison steak and roast beef. Climate sites classed as first growths: Les Beaux Mont, Les Suchots, Aux Brûlées, La Croix Rameau, Clos des Réas, Les Gaudichots, Les Chaumes, Aux Malconsorts, Au-Dessus des Malconsorts, Cros Parentoux, Aux Reignots, Les Petits Monts.
