AOC Viré-Clessé wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

Viré-Clessé embraces four villages in the Mâconnais. It is farmed by 70 growers over a combined area under vine of 390 hectares. The only permitted grape variety is Chardonnay. The vines grow either halfway up hillsides or at the summit on calcareous clay soils. In Clessé, the limestone dates back to the Oxfordian period whilst in Viré, Bajocian bedrock prevails. The entire area enjoys an east/south-east aspect.

Grape varieties: Vins blancs  : chardonnay, pinot blanc

The wines of this appellation

wines bearing the Viré-Clessé appellation display characteristic aromas of hawthorn, exotic fruit and rose. They are lively, fruity, supple, harmonious wines with great length on the palate. They are the perfect partner for fish, either grilled or served with a sauce, frogs legs or oysters.
