Alentejo V.R. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Vinho Regional

Vinho Regional Alentejano covers the entire wine-growing territory of the Alentejo, in southern Portugal, spanning the districts of Portalegre, Évora and Beja. This broad designation is distinguished from the stricter Alentejo DOC by more flexible varietal rules and a territory that extends beyond the eight sub-regions recognised for controlled-origin status (Portalegre, Borba, Redondo, Reguengos, Vidigueira, Évora, Granja-Amareleja and Moura). Soils are markedly heterogeneous, ranging from clay (barros) to schist, granite, rolled pebbles, limestone and marble depending on the area. The climate is Mediterranean with continental influence, marked by long, hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Alongside native varieties such as Antão Vaz, Roupeiro and Arinto for whites, and Aragonez, Trincadeira, Castelão and Alicante Bouschet for reds, the geographical indication also permits international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Chardonnay.

The wines of this appellation

Under the Alentejo V.R. designation, producers make red, white and rosé wines. Reds, blended from native and international varieties, show deep colour, soft tannins and a full, generous palate, with aromas of ripe dark fruit, garrigue scrub and, when barrel-aged, a touch of spice. Whites, made from Antão Vaz, Roupeiro or Arinto, are round and generous on the palate, with citrus and stone-fruit notes and freshness that varies with the dominant variety. Rosés are fruity and easy-drinking. More approachable than Alentejo DOC wines, they are generally suited to early drinking, though the more structured reds can hold for a few years. Whites and rosés pair with grilled fish, seafood and Mediterranean cuisine, while reds suit grilled meats, game and mature cheeses.
