DOC Alentejo D.O.C. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Denominação de Origem Controlada

The Alentejo appellation covers the south-central part of Portugal, in a vast region bordered by the Tagus river to the north, Spain to the east and the Algarve to the south. It comprises eight sub-regions: Portalegre, Borba, Redondo, Reguengos, Vidigueira, Évora, Granja-Amareleja and Moura. Soils are notably diverse, including schist, clay, marble, granite and limestone, and are generally low in fertility. The climate is Mediterranean with a strong continental influence, marked by wide temperature swings between cool winters and hot, dry summers. Authorized red varieties include alfrocheiro, alicante bouschet, aragonez, cabernet sauvignon, castelão, syrah, touriga nacional and trincadeira. White varieties include antão vaz, arinto, fernão pires, roupeiro and rabo de ovelha. This diversity of terroirs, combined with generous sun exposure, accounts for the range of expressions found within the appellation.

The wines of this appellation

The Alentejo appellation is best known for its red wines, which account for the largest share of regional production. They show a deep colour, a generous body and tannins that are supple and well ripened. The nose reveals ripe dark fruit such as blackberry, plum and cherry, along with spicy notes; barrel ageing can add touches of chocolate and spice. With time, the wines develop aromas of tobacco and leather. White wines, produced in smaller quantities, are fresh and aromatic, with a broad palate shaped by the region's warm climate. The reds pair well with grilled meats, barbecue dishes and slow-cooked stews, as well as matured sheep's milk cheeses such as Queijo de Évora. The whites suit grilled fish and seafood rice.
