Trevenezie I.G.P. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Trevenezie I.G.P. covers the entire regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, together with the autonomous province of Trento. It extends across the provinces of Belluno, Padua, Rovigo, Treviso, Venice, Verona and Vicenza in Veneto, and Pordenone, Udine, Gorizia and Trieste in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. This vast north-eastern Italian territory is shielded to the north by the Alps and the Dolomites, opening south towards the Adriatic Sea and the Po plain. Soils combine pre-alpine limestone formations with alluvial deposits, providing good drainage. The temperate, cool and well-ventilated climate, marked by strong day-night temperature variation, supports gradual grape ripening. Numerous white and red grape varieties are authorised, including chardonnay, pinot bianco, pinot grigio, sauvignon and garganega for whites, and merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, pinot noir and marzemino for reds. The denomination was previously named delle Venezie, before being renamed to distinguish it from the DOC of the same name.

The wines of this appellation

Trevenezie I.G.P. produces white, red and rosé wines, along with sparkling versions of each and a young red style, rosso novello. Most are varietal wines, labelled with the name of the dominant grape variety, which allows for a wide range of styles depending on the variety used. Whites made from aromatic varieties such as sauvignon, traminer or moscato are fresh and fragrant, while chardonnay and pinot bianco give crisper, more neutral, easy-drinking whites. Rosés stand out for their lightness and fruity freshness. Among the reds, merlot and rosso novello offer soft, fruity wines meant to be drunk young, while cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, marzemino or refosco produce more structured wines with greater ageing potential. Whites and rosés pair well with antipasti, fish and seafood, while reds suit white or red meats depending on their structure.
