Denominazione di Origine Controllata

The Venezia Giulia indicazione geografica tipica covers the entire administrative territory of the provinces of Gorizia, Pordenone, Trieste and Udine, in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of north-eastern Italy. It stretches from the hills near the Slovenian border, with soils formed of marl and sandstone, to the central plains, with poor and permeable soils, and on to the coastal strip, split between a low, sandy shoreline to the west and the limestone Carso plateau to the east, around Trieste. Sheltered from cold northern winds by the Julian Prealps and tempered by the nearby Adriatic Sea, the zone enjoys hot but not oppressive summers and cold, fairly rainy winters. Covering the full administrative extent of the four provinces, this indication stands out for the breadth of its grape variety base: international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Sauvignon grow alongside local varieties including Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Ribolla Gialla, Verduzzo Friulano, Malvasia Istriana and Schioppettino.

The wines of this appellation

The appellation produces white, red and rosé wines, each of which may also be made in a frizzante style, with reds additionally produced as novello. The whites range in colour from straw yellow to golden yellow, sometimes with greenish or coppery highlights, showing a pleasant, fine, sometimes aromatic nose and a palate running from dry to off-dry. The rosés show a more or less deep pink colour, a delicate nose and a fresh, harmonious palate. The reds stand out with a ruby-red colour of variable intensity, sometimes with orange highlights, a vinous, pleasant nose, sometimes ethereal or fruity, and a harmonious palate from dry to off-dry. When labelled with a grape variety name, these wines primarily express that variety's own aromatic profile. They are generally wines meant for youthful drinking, pairing well with antipasti and fish for the whites and rosés, and with cold cuts, pasta dishes or white meats for the reds.
