Denominazione di Origine Controllata
The Friuli Grave D.O.C. covers approximately 7,500 hectares on both banks of the Tagliamento river, between the provinces of Pordenone and Udine, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of north-eastern Italy. It is the largest appellation in the region. The soils are of alluvial origin, predominantly gravelly or sandy-clay, deposited by rivers flowing down from the Alps: the appellation takes its name from this stony texture, called grave in Friulian dialect. The climate, tempered by the proximity of the Adriatic Sea and cool air currents from the Alps, favours steady grape ripening. The range of authorised varieties is wide, spanning white grapes (Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Renano, Sauvignon, Friulano, Traminer Aromatico, Verduzzo Friulano) and red grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carmenère, Merlot, Pinot Nero and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso).

Friuli Grave D.O.C. produces mainly dry white wines, fresh, fruity and sapid, with a straw-yellow colour and aromatic profiles ranging from floral notes to white fruit and citrus depending on the variety. The red wines, made from Bordeaux varieties, Pinot Nero or Refosco, are aromatic and supple when young, gaining body and structure with ageing, their colour moving from ruby to garnet. The appellation also produces sparkling wines with fine, persistent bubbles and a complex aromatic profile combining mineral and fruity notes, with an elegant structure. The white wines pair well with fish, shellfish and vegetable dishes; lighter reds suit white meats and sauced pasta, while more structured cuvées match red meats and aged cheeses.
