Denominazione di Origine Controllata
The Friuli Colli Orientali D.O.C. appellation covers nineteen communes in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, in the province of Udine, close to the Slovenian border. The vineyards lie on gently sloping hills, often terraced to limit soil erosion. The soils consist of alternating layers of calcareous marl and sandstone, locally known as "ponca". The climate is shielded from cold northern winds by the Julian Prealps, while the nearby Adriatic Sea, about forty kilometres away, moderates temperature swings. The appellation authorises a wide range of grape varieties, with a significant place given to native Friulian varieties such as Friulano, Ribolla Gialla, Verduzzo Friulano, Refosco, Schioppettino, Pignolo and Tazzelenghe, alongside more widely grown varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The appellation produces mostly dry white wines, complemented by a sweet style made from semi-dried grapes, as well as red wines. The whites show a straw-yellow colour with occasional green or golden hues, a soft palate and clean aromas ranging from pronounced fruitiness to fine, elegant floral notes, with the almond character typical of Friulano. The reds display a ruby colour with varying shades, herbaceous, spicy and forest-floor aromas, and structured tannins that give them good ageing potential; some may carry the Riserva designation after extended ageing. The whites suit fish, shellfish and light starters, while the fuller-bodied reds pair with red meats, game and matured cheeses.
