Indicazione geografica tipica

The Toscana I.G.T. geographical indication covers the entire administrative territory of Tuscany, spanning its ten provinces: Arezzo, Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. The vineyards stretch from the inland hills down to the Tyrrhenian coast, across varied landscapes that combine plains, hillsides and areas of medium-elevation terrain. The production rules allow a wide range of grape varieties: native Tuscan varieties, foremost among them Sangiovese, along with Canaiolo Nero, Colorino, Mammolo, Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia, Ansonica, Aleatico and Vermentino, as well as international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Gamay. This regional scope and the freedom to blend local and international varieties set Toscana I.G.T. apart from Tuscany's DOC and DOCG appellations, which are confined to a specific zone and to mandated grape varieties.

Grape varieties: sangiovese, trebbiano, cabernet-sauvignon

The wines of this appellation

Toscana I.G.T. is produced as white, rosé and red wines, along with frizzante versions and late-harvest or passito styles. The whites show a pale colour with green tints or straw yellow, and a simple, floral nose carried by the grape's primary aromas. The rosés, ranging in depth of colour depending on the varieties used, offer a balance between acidic freshness and body. The reds range from violet to ruby, turning toward garnet with age; their fruit aromas gain complexity as they mature, and the more structured styles, built on present tannins, are suited to extended ageing, while younger versions are best enjoyed for their fruit. The passito and late-harvest wines develop a golden colour and aromas of ripe fruit and honey. Whites and rosés pair well with aperitifs, seafood and vegetable dishes, while the reds suit red meats, game and aged cheeses.
