D.O.C.G.

The appellation lies in the heart of Tuscany, between the provinces of Florence and Siena. The production zone covers approximately 71,800 hectares and includes, in full, the municipalities of Castellina in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti, Greve in Chianti and Radda in Chianti, together with parts of the municipalities of Barberino Tavarnelle, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Poggibonsi and San Casciano in Val di Pesa. The soils, of marine origin, combine galestro, a clay-and-marl schist dominant in the north, with alberese, a harder limestone marl more common in the south, alongside pockets of clay and calcareous sandstone. The hilly terrain and the altitude of the vineyards temper the Mediterranean climate, bringing freshness and favouring steady ripening. Sangiovese, Tuscany's leading grape, makes up 80 to 100 percent of the blend and may be complemented by other red varieties authorised in the region, up to 20 percent. Distinct from the wider Chianti appellation, Chianti Classico corresponds to the historic heart of the zone, identified by the black rooster emblem of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico.

The wines of this appellation

Chianti Classico Riserva is the longer-aged expression of Chianti Classico, matured in wood and then refined further in bottle before release, which gives it more structure and complexity than the standard wine. Its colour is a deep ruby red, moving toward garnet tones with age. The nose combines ripe red and black fruit, cherry and plum, with floral violet notes lifted by spice and light toasted nuances from ageing. On the palate, the tannins are firm and well integrated, the acidity lively, the whole full-bodied and persistent, with good ageing potential. This style pairs with grilled or roasted red meats, bistecca alla fiorentina, braised dishes and poultry, as well as game such as hare or pheasant. It also matches well with aged, characterful cheeses such as Tuscan pecorino.
