Indicazione geografica

The appellation coincides with the entire territory of the province of Grosseto, one of the largest in Italy, in southern Tuscany. It stretches from the Tyrrhenian coastline inland to the foothills of Monte Amiata and the Colline Metallifere, across 28 municipalities with markedly different profiles: an inland mountain zone, a broad belt of hills and foothills where most of the vineyards are concentrated, and a coastal plain around Grosseto, Follonica and Orbetello. Soils vary by area: calcareous alluvial deposits in the Ombrone and Albegna valleys, sandy and gravelly soils further inland, and volcanic, tuff-based soils around Pitigliano and Sorano. The climate is Mediterranean and temperate, with generous sunshine and steady ventilation from sea breezes. Permitted grape varieties combine historic Tuscan varieties such as sangiovese, vermentino, trebbiano toscano, ansonica and ciliegiolo with international varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah and chardonnay.

The wines of this appellation

Maremma Toscana produces mainly red and white wines, complemented by rosés and a small amount of sparkling wine. The reds, in which sangiovese is blended with cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah or ciliegiolo, show a ruby red colour with violet tints that turns garnet with age. The nose is vinous, recalling cherry and sometimes violet, with more spiced notes when cabernet or syrah predominate in the blend; the palate is dry to off-dry, balanced, with tannins that soften with cellaring. The whites, made from vermentino, trebbiano toscano and viognier, are straw yellow, with a fine, delicate nose, often floral and fruity, and a dry to off-dry, fresh, harmonious palate. The rosés, more or less deep in colour, offer delicate aromas of small red fruits. Whites and rosés pair well with antipasti, fish and seafood, while the reds suit grilled meats and traditional Tuscan cuisine.
