Ward

Simonsberg-Paarl is a ward within the Paarl district, in the Coastal Region of the Western Cape, South Africa. It lies on the northern and western slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, between the towns of Paarl and Franschhoek. The granite massif has weathered into deep, well-drained soils of the Hutton and Clovelly forms. The climate is Mediterranean, with long, warm summers tempered in the late afternoon by the shadow the mountain casts over the vineyards, giving a cooler mesoclimate than the Paarl valley floor. Bordeaux red varieties — cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and malbec — are widely planted, alongside shiraz and pinotage. Chardonnay, chenin blanc and viognier make up the white plantings. The ward is distinct from Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, which sits on the opposite side of the same mountain but falls under the Stellenbosch district.

The wines of this appellation

Simonsberg-Paarl is known mainly for structured red wines, Bordeaux-style blends led by cabernet sauvignon and rounded out with merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot and malbec. Their colour is deep garnet to purple, with aromas of black fruit, blackcurrant, cedar and tobacco, carried by firm tannins drawn from the granite-derived soils. These are wines built for cellaring, gaining spiced, savoury nuances after several years in bottle. Shiraz and pinotage give spicier, fleshier reds. Among the whites, chardonnay, often barrel-aged, shows stone fruit, citrus and flinty notes, while chenin blanc and viognier offer leaner or more floral styles. The structured reds suit grilled or braised red meats, lamb and matured cheeses; the oaked chardonnays pair well with roast poultry and fish in rich sauces.
