Ward

Tulbagh is a wine district of the Western Cape, forming part of South Africa's Coastal Region. The valley is an inland basin enclosed on several sides by the Groot Winterhoek, Witzenberg and Obiqua mountain ranges, which shield it from the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean enjoyed by several neighbouring districts within the same region. This mountain enclosure produces a marked continental climate, with hot days and cool nights, the peaks holding frost and sometimes snow in winter. Soils vary widely: sandy, stony ground over a clay base near the rivers, decomposed sandstone over a shale base on the lower slopes, and clay on the higher ground. Chenin Blanc remains the most widely planted white variety, while Shiraz has become the leading red grape, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are also grown, notably as a base for sparkling wines made using the traditional method.

The wines of this appellation

Tulbagh produces red, white and sparkling wines. The reds, based mainly on Shiraz often blended with Mediterranean varieties such as Mourvèdre and Viognier, are full-bodied and deeply coloured, with present tannins balanced by lively acidity that keeps them from heaviness; Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage contribute fuller, more structured wines. The Chenin Blanc whites are fresh and mineral, with notable ageing potential thanks to the acidity preserved by the valley's day-night temperature swings. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir serve as the base for sparkling wines made using the traditional method, one of the district's specialities. The reds pair well with grilled red meats and spiced dishes, the Chenin Blanc whites suit seafood and poultry, while the sparkling wines are well suited to aperitifs or refined starters.
