Ward
Voor Paardeberg is a ward of the Paarl district, within the Coastal Region of the Western Cape, South Africa, registered under the country's Wine of Origin scheme. The vineyards lie about fifteen kilometres north of the town of Paarl, on the southern and south-eastern slopes of the Paardeberg, a granite inselberg roughly 35 kilometres inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Its name, meaning 'in front of the mountain', distinguishes it from Agter-Paardeberg, on the opposite side of the same massif, within the neighbouring Swartland district. The soils are derived from decomposed granite, well drained and rich in potassium. The climate is hot and dry but tempered by coastal influence and southerly winds, which keep summer temperatures on average about 5°C cooler than in Paarl and widen the day-to-night temperature swing on the highest-lying vineyards. The red varieties Shiraz, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted across the ward, while Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc are grown mainly on the higher slopes.

Voor Paardeberg is best known for red wines built around Shiraz, made in a style close to the wines of the Rhône: full-bodied, structured wines with a marked balance between fruit and spice. Colour tends to be deep, with substantial tannins reflecting the ward's hot, dry growing conditions. Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon complete the red plantings, sometimes blended into Bordeaux-style cuvées. The white wines, made from Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc grown on the highest slopes, gain freshness from the wide day-to-night temperature swing. The reds, structured and with good ageing potential, pair with grilled red meats, lamb and feathered game. The whites, more lively, suit poultry and grilled fish.
