Isola dei Nuraghi I.G.T. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Isola dei Nuraghi is a broad geographical indication whose production area covers the entire administrative territory of Sardinia, making it one of the most extensive appellations in Italy. The island has a Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and mild winters tempered by Atlantic currents; the sea's proximity limits temperature swings along the coast, while rainfall, which is scarce, is concentrated in spring and autumn. Soils reflect the island's geological diversity: granite from the Gennargentu massif, calcareous and sandy soils in the Campidano plain, and volcanic soils in the Sulcis area. The production rules allow white, red and rosé grape varieties suited to cultivation in Sardinia, including identity varieties such as Vermentino, Cannonau, Carignano, Monica, Nuragus, Nasco, Semidano, Girò, Malvasia and Vernaccia, alongside national and international varieties.

The wines of this appellation

Isola dei Nuraghi produces white, red and rosé wines, made in still, novello, frizzante, spumante, late-harvest and passito styles. Along the coast, Vermentino and other white varieties yield fresh wines with balanced acidity and floral, marine aromas. Further inland, altitude and wide diurnal temperature swings favour fuller-bodied, structured red wines with pronounced aromatic intensity, often based on Cannonau or Carignano. The wines may be made from a single variety or as blends. The whites pair well with fish, shellfish and light starters, the rosés suit Mediterranean cuisine and summer grilling, while the more structured reds, with good aging potential, match red meats, slow-cooked dishes and aged cheeses.
