With its 50 hectares under vine, this great growth is the largest in the Côte d’Or and is located in the village of Vougeot, north of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Created between the 11th and 14th centuries by the monks of Cîteaux who built a wall around it, the growth is currently divided between almost 80 different owners ! The soil types are extremely varied. The higher elevations adjacent to Bonnes-Mares and Grands-Echezeaux, are home to light, gravely chalk resting on a bedrock of oolitic limestone. Further down the slopes, the soil is softer limestone containing clay and gravel and at the very bottom, it is rich in alluvial clay. Classic Clos de Vougeot displays a deep red colour and aromas of red and black fruit (cherries, blackcurrant, blackberries), undergrowth and violet. As it matures, it develops aromas of fur, truffle and musk. A robust, firm, lively wine in its youth, it exhibits delicate tannins and a discrete touch of acidity. As a rule, the better wines come from the plots in the upper reaches of the Clos, though with such a great vineyard and range of growers, the wines cover a broad spectrum. Try with pheasant with apples.
