Denominazione di origine controllata e garantita

The Brunello di Montalcino D.O.C.G. appellation covers the single municipality of Montalcino, in Tuscany, about forty kilometres south of Siena. The production area extends over roughly 24,000 hectares, bounded by the Ombrone, Asso and Orcia rivers, of which only a small share is planted with vines. Vineyard altitude ranges from 120 to 650 metres, creating a wide diversity of exposures and microclimates across the hills of Montalcino. Soils change with altitude: loose, alluvial-derived soils in the lower areas give way, higher up, to soils enriched with galestro and alberese formed by rock decomposition. The climate is Mediterranean and dry, with continental influences; Mount Amiata, rising to 1,740 metres, shields the territory from severe weather. Only one grape variety is permitted: Sangiovese, known locally as "Brunello".

The wines of this appellation

Brunello di Montalcino is a red wine made exclusively from Sangiovese. Its colour is a bright, brilliant garnet that deepens with age. The nose is intense and persistent, with notes of undergrowth, aromatic wood, small red fruits, light vanilla and preserved fruit. On the palate it is elegant and harmonious, with vigour and character, a dry structure and long aromatic persistence. It is a wine suited to prolonged ageing, capable of improving for ten to thirty years or more, depending on the vintage, when properly cellared. It pairs with red meats, game and aged cheeses such as pecorino toscano, and is equally enjoyed on its own as a meditation wine.
