Bourgogne Côte d'Or wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Bourgogne Côte d'Or is a complementary geographical denomination of the regional Bourgogne appellation, obtained in 2017. It brings together 40 communes spread across the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits, along a strip of vines 65 kilometres long and one to two kilometres wide, running from Dijon to the Maranges. The vineyard follows a diagonal line from north-east to south-west, on slopes between 200 and 450 metres in altitude, mostly facing south-east. The soils consist of ancient alluvial deposits: clay-rich scree and colluvium, clay loams and gravels at the mouths of the combes. The climate is temperate, with a warm, dry tendency. Two grape varieties are authorised: pinot noir for red wines and chardonnay for white wines. Within the regional Bourgogne appellation, this denomination sets apart wines from the communes of the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits, between Dijon and the Maranges.

The wines of this appellation

Bourgogne Côte d'Or produces still red and white wines. The reds, made from pinot noir, show a cherry-red colour with deep ruby reflections. The nose expresses cherry, blackcurrant and blackberry, with hints of pomegranate and peony. The palate is supple and delicate, carried by fine tannins and a pulpy fruit character, finishing fresh and light. They pair with charcuterie, hearty salads, grilled poultry, white meats or roast beef, as well as soft-rind cheeses. The whites, made from chardonnay, display a pale golden-yellow colour with silvery yellow-green reflections. The nose recalls lemon, pear, almond, acacia and hawthorn blossom, sometimes peach, lime blossom or pineapple. On the palate, the rounded, fruity character turns saline and lemony on the finish, with notes of liquorice and brioche. They match well with fine fish in sauce, snails in butter, poultry with parmesan and creamy cheeses.
