Vino de la Tierra

The Vino de la Tierra de Castilla appellation covers the entire territory of Castilla-La Mancha, in central Spain, across the five provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo. A smaller geographical unit, Campo de Calatrava, groups sixteen municipalities in the province of Ciudad Real and may appear on the label. The soils are low in organic matter and rich in limestone, under a continental climate marked by strong sunshine and low rainfall. The range of authorised grape varieties is particularly wide: white varieties include Airén, Macabeo, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdejo and Chardonnay; red varieties include Tempranillo (locally known as Cencibel), Bobal, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. This varietal freedom, broader than that of the region's denominaciones de origen, allows producers to craft both single-varietal wines and blends.

The wines of this appellation

Wines from the appellation come in a wide range of styles: still white, rosé and red wines, quality sparkling wines, semi-sparkling wines, liqueur wines and wines made from overripe grapes. The whites, crisp and light, show aromas of fresh fruit and white flowers. The rosés stand out for their freshness. The reds, made notably from Tempranillo, Bobal or Garnacha, are balanced and structured; some carry the traditional terms Añejo, Noble or Viejo, reserved for wines that have undergone extended ageing. The sparkling wines, whose carbon dioxide comes solely from fermentation, range from brut nature to sweet and may carry the terms Premium or Reserva. Served young, the whites and rosés pair well with cured meats, sheep's milk cheeses and light Mediterranean dishes; the structured reds suit grilled meats, slow-cooked dishes and game, while the finest cuvées can be cellared for several years.
