Denominacion de Origen

Tierra de Castilla is a protected geographical indication covering the entire territory of Castilla-La Mancha, in central Spain, across the region's five provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo. In twenty-eight municipalities within the zone, vineyards occupy more than half of the agricultural land. Soils are poor in organic matter and rich in limestone. The climate is continental, marked by high sunshine exceeding 3,500 hours a year, scarce rainfall, and cool nights following warm days, particularly in autumn. The range of authorised grape varieties is unusually wide: white varieties include Airén, Macabeo (Viura), Verdejo, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc; red varieties include Tempranillo (Cencibel), Bobal, Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Rather than a narrow communal area, this indication covers the whole of the regional territory, setting it apart from the more localised denominaciones de origen found within Castilla-La Mancha.

The wines of this appellation

Tierra de Castilla produces white, rosé and red wines. The whites are fine and light, with floral and fruity notes carried by the pronounced aromatic intensity typical of this warm, sun-drenched region. The rosés stand out for their deep pink colour, freshness and good ageing capacity. The reds, made mainly from Tempranillo, Bobal and Garnacha Tinta, sometimes blended with international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah, are aromatic, balanced and structured, with pronounced tannic power; alcohol levels generally range between 11 and 14 degrees. White and rosé wines pair well with tapas, fish, shellfish and poultry, while the fuller-bodied reds suit grilled red meats, stews, game and aged cheeses.
