DOCG Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Denominazione di Origine Controllata e garantita

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano D.O.C.G. is produced exclusively within the municipality of Montepulciano, in the province of Siena, in southeastern Tuscany. The vineyards lie between 250 and 600 metres above sea level, on hillsides shaped by ancient Pliocene marine deposits. The sandy-to-clay soils are characteristic of this area, a feature rare in Tuscany, found elsewhere mainly around San Gimignano and almost absent from Montalcino and Chianti Classico. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers followed by a cooling period that favours the aromatic and phenolic ripening of the grapes. The main variety is Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile, which must account for at least 70% of the blend. It is complemented by other red varieties authorised in Tuscany, along with a smaller proportion of white varieties.

The wines of this appellation

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is produced only as a red wine, released either in its classic version or as a longer-aged Riserva. Its colour is ruby red, turning garnet with age. The nose shows red and black fruit such as cherry and plum, alongside floral notes of violet and rose, spice tones of white pepper, cinnamon and vanilla, and an earthy undertone. With time, Riserva wines develop notes of wood, liquorice, tea and dried herbs. On the palate they are structured and balanced, carried by firm tannins and lively acidity that give them good ageing potential, with the finest bottles capable of being kept for several years. Young, they pair with grilled or roasted red meats such as beef, wild boar and lamb. More mature examples go well with aged cheeses.
