Valle del Maule wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Valle del Maule is one of the subregions of Chile's Central Valley wine region, within the Maule Region. It covers seventeen communes across the provinces of Talca and Linares, plus the commune of Cauquenes, divided into three zones: Valle del Claro, Valle del Loncomilla and Valle del Tutuvén. Soils vary from one zone to another: granite-derived soils formed by the slow weathering of bedrock predominate around Cauquenes, while deeper, more alluvial profiles are found in Loncomilla. The climate is Mediterranean, with cool, rainy winters and dry, warm summers; cold air flowing down from the Andes widens the gap between daytime and nighttime temperatures, slowing grape ripening. Valle del Maule stands out for the coexistence of century-old, dry-farmed vines planted with País and Cinsault alongside more recent plantings of international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Chardonnay.

The wines of this appellation

Valle del Maule produces mostly red wines, alongside a smaller white production. Wines made from international varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenère, Syrah, show a deep colour, firm tannic structure and real ageing potential, the day-night temperature swing helping preserve the grapes' acidity. Wines made from old, dry-farmed País and Cinsault vines offer, by contrast, a lighter, fresher profile, with supple tannins and aromas of crisp red fruit, best enjoyed young. Whites, led by Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, are crisp and aromatic. Structured reds pair with grilled red meats, slow-cooked dishes and matured cheeses, while the lighter reds go well with grilled fare, cold cuts and everyday dishes. Whites are best served with seafood, fish and poultry.
