Valle del Rapel wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Valle del Rapel is a Chilean wine appellation within the Central Valley (Valle Central), located in the O'Higgins Region south of Santiago. It covers the region's three provinces and splits into two distinct sub-valleys: Valle del Cachapoal, closer to the Andean foothills, and Valle de Colchagua, which extends toward the Pacific coast. The climate is warm, dry and Mediterranean, though microclimates vary noticeably between the cooler Andean foothill slopes and the milder areas near Lake Rapel and the coast, tempered by ocean influence. Soils combine alluvial deposits, clay and volcanic material, with granite outcrops in some sectors. The vineyard area is overwhelmingly planted to red varieties, with Cabernet Sauvignon covering the largest surface, alongside Carménère, Merlot and Syrah; Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc complete the white plantings. This range of soils and exposures sets Rapel apart from Maipo to the north and Curicó to the south.

The wines of this appellation

Valle del Rapel produces predominantly red wines, known for their depth of colour and body. Carménère finds particularly favourable conditions here, yielding wines with a deep purple hue, aromas of dark fruit, ripe bell pepper, spice and lightly toasted notes, with present but well-integrated tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure, firm tannins and notes of blackcurrant and graphite, while Merlot and Syrah add roundness or spice depending on the blend. These red wines have good ageing potential and gain complexity after a few years in bottle, developing notes of undergrowth and leather. Whites, made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, are less common but show a marked freshness in the more coastal sectors, shaped by ocean proximity. The reds pair well with grilled or braised red meats, game and aged cheeses, while the whites suit fish and grilled vegetable dishes.
