Valle de Cachapoal wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Valle de Cachapoal lies within Chile's Valle Central, in Cachapoal Province (O'Higgins Region), and together with Valle de Colchagua forms the broader Valle de Rapel. The vineyards stretch between the Andes foothills to the east and the coastal hills to the west, around towns such as Rancagua, Requínoa, Rengo, Peumo, Machalí and Coltauco. Soils change markedly from east to west: gravelly, sandy colluvial soils washed down from the Andean slopes improve drainage and limit vine vigour on the eastern side, while more fertile loamy soils to the west suit Carménère. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm summers, mild winters and a wide day-to-night temperature swing that becomes more pronounced at altitude in the area known as Alto Cachapoal. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Carménère are among the valley's most widely planted grape varieties.

The wines of this appellation

Valle de Cachapoal is best known for its red wines, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère, often blended with Merlot or Syrah. On the gravelly Andean-foothill soils, especially in the higher Alto Cachapoal area, Cabernet Sauvignon yields deep-coloured, structured wines with ripe tannins and black-fruit aromas, their freshness preserved by cool nights. On the more fertile soils to the west, Carménère produces smooth, spicy wines with a light herbal note and a rounded texture. These reds age well and gain complexity with a few years in bottle. They pair naturally with grilled or braised red meats, game and slow-cooked dishes. The whites, made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, are fresh and aromatic, showing citrus and white-fruit notes; they suit fish, shellfish and poultry.
