Valle de Uco wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Valle de Uco is a wine sub-region of Mendoza, Argentina, extending at the foot of the Andes across the departments of Tupungato, Tunuyán and San Carlos, along the Tunuyán river. The vineyards lie between 900 and 1,200 metres above sea level, with some plots exceeding 1,500 metres in sectors such as Gualtallary. The soils are of alluvial origin, poor and stony, made of pebbles and sand over considerable depth, inherited from ancient riverbeds descending from the Andes. The climate is semi-desert, marked by strong sunshine, low rainfall and irrigation drawn from Andean snowmelt. The diurnal temperature range is particularly wide, more pronounced than in the neighboring zones of Luján de Cuyo or Maipú, which lie at lower altitude. The vineyard combines red varieties, led by malbec, alongside cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot and pinot noir, and white varieties such as chardonnay, sémillon, riesling and pinot gris.

The wines of this appellation

Valle de Uco produces mostly red wines built around malbec, the region's flagship variety. Altitude and cool nights give wines with deep color, fine and silky tannins, and marked natural acidity that lends freshness and elegance despite their concentration. The nose recalls black fruit such as blackberry and blackcurrant, violet and floral notes, sometimes spicy or mineral in the highest terroirs. White wines, mainly from chardonnay or sémillon, stand out for their tension and aromatic freshness, driven by altitude. These wines have an ageing potential ranging from a few years for the most accessible bottlings to several years for the most concentrated terroir wines. At the table, the reds pair with grilled red meats, asado, game and matured cheeses; the whites go well with fish, seafood and spiced dishes.
