Luján de Cuyo wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Lujan de Cuyo is a wine-producing department in Mendoza province, Argentina, located roughly thirty kilometres south of the city of Mendoza, on the eastern piedmont of the Andes. The vineyards lie mainly between 800 and 1,100 metres above sea level, spread across several districts, including Agrelo, Vistalba, Las Compuertas, Perdriel and Mayor Drummond. The soils are alluvial, combining loam and clay with gravel and pebbles that provide good drainage. The climate is semi-arid and continental, shielded by the Andes from humid Pacific winds, with low rainfall and a wide swing between daytime and nighttime temperatures during ripening. Created in 1989, the region is considered one of the first controlled appellations of the Americas, historically linked to malbec, the grape that has become emblematic of Lujan de Cuyo. Cabernet sauvignon, syrah, bonarda, tempranillo, pinot noir and merlot, as well as chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, are also grown there.

The wines of this appellation

Lujan de Cuyo is known above all for malbec red wines, deep purple in colour, with aromas of ripe dark fruit such as plum, blackberry and blackcurrant, together with violet and liquorice, often layered with spicy, toasted or vanilla notes when aged in oak. Their tannins are present yet silky, carried by a lively acidity drawn from the altitude of the vineyards, which gives the wines good ageing potential. Cabernet sauvignon, syrah and bonarda also go into structured red wines, either as varietals or blended with malbec. White wines are rarer, made from chardonnay or sauvignon blanc, and stand out for their freshness. These red wines pair well with grilled meats, especially Argentine beef, as well as slow-cooked dishes and aged cheeses. Younger wines also suit pasta in tomato sauce or grilled vegetables.
