Valle de Colchagua wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Valle de Colchagua is a wine zone within the Valle del Rapel subregion, itself part of Chile's Valle Central viticultural region. It covers the provinces of Colchagua and Cardenal Caro, stretching from the Andean foothills to the Pacific coast, a span that sets it apart from Valle del Cachapoal, the Rapel's other zone, which is more confined to the Andean side. Soils range from well-drained granitic soils on the Andean slopes to alluvial clay soils on the valley floor, then granite and red volcanic soils closer to the coast. The Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers, is tempered by breezes moving up the Tinguiririca River from the Pacific and by the cooling influence of the Andes, which slows and evens out grape ripening. Bordeaux red varieties, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and carmenere, dominate production, alongside syrah; white varieties, more recent, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, are developing near the coast.

The wines of this appellation

Valle de Colchagua produces mostly red wines, known for their deep colour, freshness and good ageing potential. Carmenere gives wines with an ample structure and soft tannins, showing aromas of dark cherry, tobacco, dried herbs and pepper; cabernet sauvignon, fuller-bodied, expresses cassis, blackberry, tobacco and cedar, with firm yet ripe tannins. The most carefully crafted cuvees, aged in barrel, can be cellared for several years and develop notes of leather, truffle and spice over time. These red wines pair well with grilled red meat, lamb, slow-cooked stews and aged cheeses; carmenere matches particularly well with empanadas and other slow-cooked Chilean dishes. White wines, still a minority, focus on freshness and suit fish and shellfish.
