Valdepeñas D.O. lies in the south of Ciudad Real province, in Castilla-La Mancha. The production area covers ten municipalities: Valdepeñas, Santa Cruz de Mudela, Moral de Calatrava, Alcubillas, San Carlos del Valle and Torrenueva in full, plus parts of Alhambra, Granátula de Calatrava, Montiel and Torre de Juan Abad. The vineyards sit at an average altitude of 705 metres, on calcareous, sandy and gypsum-rich soils, along with reddish-yellow clay terrains low in organic matter. The climate is dry and continental, with more than 2,500 hours of sunshine a year; rainfall is scarce, between 200 and 400 mm, and temperature swings are marked, from below -10°C in winter to above 40°C in summer. This water stress limits yields and favours a slow ripening of the grapes. Authorized varieties are, for whites, Airén, Macabeo (Viura), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Moscatel de Grano Menudo and Verdejo, and for reds, Cencibel (Tempranillo), Garnacha Tinta, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot.

The wines of this appellation

Valdepeñas D.O. produces red, white, rosé and sparkling wines. The reds, made mainly from Cencibel (Tempranillo), show a garnet to violet red colour, intense aromas of ripe red fruit, a fleshy, dry palate with balanced tannins and medium to high acidity. Oak-aged wines gain notes of ripe fruit and spice; Reserva wines take on garnet tones with ochre hues, a round, velvety palate with vanilla nuances and a long finish, while Gran Reserva, ruby-coloured, stand out for their spiced complexity and a fleshy, velvety, harmonious palate. Whites, pale yellow with greenish or amber hues, are fresh, fruity, soft and balanced; those aged in barrel develop a more complex, golden profile with volume and persistence. Rosés, tinged with red and violet hues, offer a fresh profile reminiscent of red fruit. Structured reds pair with red meats and game, younger reds with poultry and charcuterie, and whites and rosés with fish and seafood.
