IGP Val de Loire wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

I.G.P.

The Val de Loire IGP covers fourteen départements on either side of the river, from Puy-de-Dôme to the Atlantic estuary in Loire-Atlantique. The climate is temperate, oceanic in the west and more continental toward the east. Soils vary widely by area, combining sand, chalk, tuffeau, clay-limestone, schist, sandstone, granite and gravel. More than thirty grape varieties are authorised: sauvignon, chardonnay and chenin for the white wines, cabernet franc, gamay and pinot noir for the reds, alongside more regional varieties such as pineau d'aunis, grolleau and melon de Bourgogne. This protected geographical indication is distinguished from the surrounding appellations d'origine contrôlée by a much wider territory and a broader range of permitted grapes, allowing producers across the Loire Valley to market wines under a shared name without being tied to a single communal terroir.

The wines of this appellation

Val de Loire IGP wines come in four colours: white, rosé, gris and red. The white wines, which account for the majority of production, are mostly vinified dry; they are marked by freshness and delicate fruity and floral aromas, with notes of apple and quince from chenin, citrus and white flowers from sauvignon, and lime blossom, hazelnut and brioche from chardonnay. Rosé and gris wines, paler in colour thanks to a shortened maceration, are light and easy-drinking. The red wines, with a supple to sometimes fuller structure, favour freshness: gamay gives fruity wines built on red fruit, cabernet franc brings raspberry and violet notes, and pinot noir offers cherry aromas. These wines pair readily with charcuterie and the region's goat cheeses, such as Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine.
