Swartland wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Swartland is a wine district within the Coastal Region of the Western Cape, South Africa, located roughly sixty kilometres north of Cape Town. The vineyards spread between the towns of Malmesbury, Riebeek Kasteel, Riebeek West, Moorreesburg and Piketberg, on hills sloping toward the Atlantic coast. Soils are dominated by Malmesbury Group shale, complemented by granite on the Paardeberg, sandstone on the Kasteelberg, and sandstone and schist around Porseleinberg and Piketberg. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, moderated by the Atlantic Ocean. Low rainfall has favoured dryland, unirrigated bush-vine farming, which has preserved a heritage of old vines of chenin blanc, cinsault, grenache, carignan and syrah, some more than forty years old. Chenin blanc leads the white plantings, syrah the red ones.

The wines of this appellation

Swartland produces concentrated white and red wines, largely drawn from unirrigated, low-yielding old bush vines. The whites, based on chenin blanc, are full yet taut, with aromas of orchard fruit, citrus, white flowers and honey, carried by a ripe acidity that gives them real ageing potential. The reds are built on syrah, often blended with grenache, mourvedre and cinsault in Rhone-inspired cuvees, alongside pinotage. Their colour is deep, their tannins dense yet ripe, with aromas of dark fruit, pepper, garrigue and smoky notes that turn spicier with age. The whites pair with grilled fish, poultry and goat cheese. The reds suit game, roasted or braised meats and spiced dishes.
