Stellenbosch - Banghoek wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Ward

The Banghoek ward lies within the Stellenbosch district, part of the Coastal Region within the Western Cape geographical unit, South Africa. It occupies a narrow valley between the towns of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, crossed by the Helshoogte Pass and flanked by the Simonsberg and Jonkershoek mountain ranges. Vineyard altitude, ranging from 250 to 720 metres, combined with high annual rainfall of around 1000 to 2000 mm, makes it one of the coolest and wettest wards in the Stellenbosch district. Soils consist of sandstone and decomposed granite, providing good drainage on the slopes. The valley's name, which in Afrikaans evokes a place feared by early pioneers, recalls its past isolation behind this mountain pass; Banghoek is today counted among the most recently developed wards of Stellenbosch. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the main varieties grown here, alongside Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc.

The wines of this appellation

Banghoek produces both red and white wines shaped by the freshness that altitude and the valley's higher rainfall bring. The reds, mainly based on Cabernet Sauvignon, show a deep colour and softer tannins than those of neighbouring Stellenbosch wards, carried by an acidity that lends them freshness and good staying power. Chardonnay-based whites are marked by citrus and stone-fruit aromas, lively acidity and, after barrel ageing, more buttery and vanilla-tinged notes. Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc complete the range with taut wines showing floral notes and a saline minerality. The reds pair well with grilled red meats and game, while the whites suit fish, shellfish and poultry in sauce.
