This is the most northerly of the six Haut-Médoc communal appellations. Set on gravely outcrops with a stony limestone, and occasionally clayey subsoil, it is a red-wine only appellation. The five 1855 classed growths account for just 20% of overall production, underscoring the crucial role of the Bourgeois growths and the lesser wine growers, at the root of the area’s diverse wine styles.
Grape varieties: Vins rouges: Cabernet-sauvignon, Cabernet franc, merlot, malbec, petit verdot, carmenère

As a rule, Saint-Estèphe tend to have great depth of colour and a robust structure which does not compromise their finesse. They have a full tannic structure and cover a broad aromatic spectrum. They are robust, though not unpleasantly so, and are extremely well-suited to cellaring. Ripe red fruit and spices are the predominant aromas. Serve with large game, roast meat or meat served in a sauce, and a choice of cheeses.
