DO Rueda D.O. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Denominacion de Origen

Rueda D.O. lies across the provinces of Valladolid, Segovia and Ávila, in Castile and León, on a high plateau at an altitude of roughly 700 to 930 metres. The climate is continental, with hot, dry summers, long cold winters, strong sunshine and low rainfall; the marked day-to-night temperature swing supports ripening while preserving the grapes' acidity. Soils are brown, calcareous and stony, rich in rolled pebbles known locally as cascajo, well drained and permeable. Verdejo, the native variety, dominates the vineyard and is the appellation's historic grape; it is complemented by Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, Chardonnay and Viognier for white wines, and by Tempranillo for reds. Rueda D.O. was the first denomination of origin recognised in Castile and León; it specialised in white wine production, which sets it apart from its neighbours Ribera del Duero and Toro, both oriented toward red wines.

Grape varieties: Blancs : verdejo, viura, sauvignon, palomino

The wines of this appellation

Rueda D.O. produces mainly white wines, made chiefly from Verdejo, alone or blended with Sauvignon Blanc, Viura, Chardonnay or Viognier. Their colour is pale straw yellow; the nose, shaped by Verdejo, shows fresh herbal, fennel and aniseed notes over a fruity base, with lively acidity and a characteristic, slightly bitter finish. These are young, fresh, aromatic wines, best enjoyed on their fruit. The appellation also produces rosé wines, fresh and fruity with exotic fruit notes, and red wines, mainly Tempranillo-based, released as joven, crianza, reserva or gran reserva depending on time spent in oak and bottle. Sparkling wines made by the traditional method complete the range. Rueda whites pair naturally with aperitifs, fish, shellfish and salads; young rosés and reds suit white meats and Mediterranean dishes, while oak-aged reds match richer, more full-bodied meat dishes.
