DO Toro D.O. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Denominacion de Origen

The Toro D.O. lies in Castile and Leon, in northwestern Spain, on both banks of the Duero river, across the provinces of Zamora and Valladolid. It covers fifteen municipalities, twelve in Zamora and three in Valladolid, on sandy-clay soils of low fertility, at times marked by limestone elements, at altitudes ranging from 620 to 870 metres. The climate is continental and semi-arid with Atlantic influences, bringing wide temperature swings between winter and summer, limited rainfall and generous sunshine throughout the year. The leading grape is Tinta de Toro, a local biotype of Tempranillo, joined for red wines by Garnacha; Verdejo, Malvasía Castellana, Albillo Real and Moscatel de grano menudo make up the white varieties. Unlike many neighbouring Castilian appellations, Toro allows no variety foreign to the region, preserving an entirely local varietal profile.

The wines of this appellation

Toro D.O. produces mostly red wines, made chiefly from Tinta de Toro, sometimes complemented or replaced by Garnacha. Their colour ranges from bright cherry red with violet hues in young wines to deeper tones in oak-aged wines. The nose combines ripe red and black fruit, blackberry, blackcurrant and sloe, followed, with ageing, by sweet spice, leather, tobacco and toasted notes. On the palate these are powerful, full-bodied wines with a firm tannic structure that softens over time, offering real ageing potential for crianza, reserva and gran reserva styles. The appellation also produces, in smaller volumes, rosé wines from Tinta de Toro and Garnacha, along with white wines from Verdejo, Malvasía Castellana, Albillo Real or Moscatel de grano menudo, fresher and more aromatic in style. Young reds pair well with grilled meats and cold cuts; aged wines suit red meats, game and mature cheeses, while the whites go well with fish and seafood.
