AOC Roussette de Savoie wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

A.O.C./A.O.P.

The Roussette de Savoie appellation stretches in an arc along the Alpine foothills of Savoie and Haute-Savoie, with one additional commune in Isère. The vines grow on soils with a limestone substrate, stony mid-slope moraines and clay-limestone marls, at elevations that stay below 500 metres. The climate is temperate semi-continental with Alpine influence, offering strong sunshine that favours grape ripening. The appellation relies on a single grape variety, altesse, also called roussette, whose presence in Savoie is documented as far back as the fourteenth century. This exclusivity sets it apart from other Savoie appellations, which blend several varieties in the same wine. Four complementary geographic designations, Frangy, Marestel, Monterminod and Monthoux, may accompany the appellation name when the grapes come from their smaller, delimited terroirs, known for wines of character.

The wines of this appellation

Roussette de Savoie produces exclusively dry white wines, pale yellow in colour, with a rich, full texture on the palate. The nose shows white and yellow fruit, honey, almond and hazelnut, alongside floral notes of violet and mountain herbs, rounded out by a touch of bergamot. Well-present acidity gives these wines structure and the capacity to age for several years. Wines from Marestel stand out for their greater tasting amplitude, linked to more advanced grape ripeness, while those from Frangy, Monterminod and Monthoux show a more floral character on the nose. These wines pair readily with aperitifs, fish, shellfish, salads, gratins, as well as cheese and Savoie dishes such as fondue or tartiflette.
