Rosso Piceno Superiore is produced in a restricted area of the province of Ascoli Piceno, in the southern Marche, stretching between the Adriatic coast — from the northern boundary of the municipality of Grottammare to Porto d'Ascoli — and the inland hills toward Ascoli Piceno. This sub-zone is distinct from the wider Rosso Piceno DOC, which spans four provinces of the Marche, as the Superiore designation is reserved for the municipalities considered best suited to growing sangiovese and montepulciano. The landscape is hilly, with elevations between 300 and 600 metres, on clay and limestone soils. The climate, moderated by the nearby Adriatic Sea, brings hot summers and cold winters, with moderate annual rainfall. The blend is based on montepulciano and sangiovese, which may be complemented by other red grape varieties authorised in the province.

Rosso Piceno Superiore yields red wines that are more structured than standard Rosso Piceno, the result of a longer period of aging before release. The ruby red colour develops garnet and orange highlights over time. The nose is complex and slightly ethereal, with notes of red fruit, liquorice and cocoa. On the palate, the wines are full-bodied, harmonious, savoury and persistent, with firmer tannins than the standard Rosso Piceno. These traits allow them to age well for several years in the cellar. They pair readily with roasted and grilled meats, poultry, game and aged sheep's milk cheeses such as pecorino.
