IGP Pays d'Oc - Cité de Carcassonne wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

I.G.P.

Cité de Carcassonne is a complementary geographical denomination of the Pays d'Oc IGP, covering some twenty communes in the Aude department clustered around the fortified city of Carcassonne, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The zone is bordered by the Malepère hills to the west, the first foothills of the Pyrenees to the south, the Minervois and Corbières to the east, and the Cabardès to the north; it unfolds in a wide arc over soils of molassic origin. Carcassonne lies at the meeting point of two climatic influences, Mediterranean and Atlantic, with winds alternating more than 300 days a year. This transitional climate brings around 700 mm of rainfall annually, spread over close to 150 days, limiting the summer droughts typical of a strict Mediterranean climate. The grape varieties combine Atlantic types such as Merlot, the Cabernets and Cot, traditional Mediterranean varieties such as Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah, and crossbred varieties such as Caladoc, Chenanson and Marselan.

The wines of this appellation

Cité de Carcassonne produces still wines in all three colours: red, rosé and white. Red wines show a bright colour; depending on maceration length, they display intense fruity notes when short, or a more spiced character carried by a smooth structure when longer. Rosé and white wines are marked by a freshness that highlights their fruity or floral character and gives them length on the palate. Red and rosé wines are generally blends of several grape varieties, while whites are usually made from a single variety. The whole production keeps the structure and body typical of Mediterranean wines while showing a distinct elegance and freshness, shaped by the meeting of local climatic influences. Fruity young reds pair well with grilled meats and charcuterie, while spicier, more structured reds suit game and slow-cooked dishes. Fresh, floral rosés and whites go well with Mediterranean cuisine and grilled fish.
