IGP Coteaux de Béziers wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

I.G.P.

The Coteaux de Béziers appellation covers 17 communes in the Hérault department, centered on the city of Béziers. The vineyards lie in a corridor between two coastal rivers, the Libron and the Orb, which flow from the foothills of the Cévennes to the Mediterranean. In the north, the soils consist of marls and colluvium dating from the Tertiary era; in the south, Quaternary alluvial deposits dominate, including the Corneilhan sands, a sandy formation up to 40 metres thick. The Mediterranean climate, with hot dry summers and mild winters, is moderated near the coast by sea winds; rainfall ranges from 400 to 800 mm depending on the area. This diversity of soils supports a wide range of grape varieties, producing still red, rosé and white wines.

The wines of this appellation

Coteaux de Béziers wines come in red, rosé and white, with rosé accounting for almost as large a share as red. The reds, made mainly from grenache, syrah, merlot or cabernet sauvignon, show a deep ruby to garnet robe with violet hues; the nose, dominated by red and black fruit, opens onto notes of mint, liquorice and spice, while the palate combines firm tannins with fruity roundness. The rosés, made from cinsault, grenache and syrah, range from pale pink to salmon pink, with a subtle nose of red berries and a round, refreshing palate. The whites, made from chardonnay, sauvignon, viognier, vermentino, marsanne or grenache blanc, show a golden-yellow colour with green tints, aromas of exotic fruit and citrus, and a lively freshness on the palate. Driven by primary, fruity aromas, these wines are best enjoyed young, the reds with grilled meats and charcuterie, the rosés as an aperitif or with Mediterranean dishes, the whites with fish and seafood.
