IGP Gard wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

I.G.P.

IGP Gard covers every commune in the Gard department, in Languedoc, at the crossroads of the Rhône valley, the Mediterranean coast and Provence. The vineyard spans three distinct areas: the Cévennes foothills to the north, where limestone soils dominate; the limestone garrigue surrounding the Pont du Gard; and the coastal plain reaching toward the Camargue, marked by sandy soils. The climate is Mediterranean. Traditional Languedoc varieties, grenache and carignan, are grown alongside varieties from other French wine regions, such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon, used as single varietals or in blends. The Gard vineyard, the first in France to be hit by phylloxera in the 19th century, later became a recognized center for vine nurseries and clone conservation. It is managed by the Fédération gardoise des vins à IGP.

The wines of this appellation

IGP Gard produces still red, rosé and white wines, made as single varietals or blends from the traditional Languedoc grapes grenache and carignan, alongside broader varieties such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon. The wine's name may be completed with the name of the grape variety or varieties used, highlighting single-varietal cuvées. Red and rosé wines dominate production, with a growing share of rosé now approaching 40% of volumes. Red wines show a balanced structure and soft tannins. Rosé and white wines are vinified to preserve freshness and aromatic finesse. Primeur or nouveau wines, meant for quick consumption after harvest, are also produced. Overall, these wines are made for early drinking rather than for cellaring.
