Denominazione di Origine Controllata e garantita

The Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G. appellation lies in Umbria, in the province of Perugia, on the hills surrounding the town of Montefalco. The production zone covers the entire territory of Montefalco together with parts of four neighbouring communes: Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi and Giano dell'Umbria. Vineyards are planted between 220 and 472 metres above sea level, on well-exposed hillsides set back from the valley floors. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, ranging across lacustrine clays and sands, alluvial deposits and marls, generally with a moderate stone content. The climate is Mediterranean with subcontinental influence, combining hot, dry summers with cooler, rainier winters. A single grape variety is authorised: sagrantino, a thick-skinned variety native to Umbria. Unlike the neighbouring Montefalco Rosso D.O.C., a sangiovese-based blend, Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G. is vinified exclusively from this one variety.

The wines of this appellation

Sagrantino produces powerful red wines, considered among the most tannic in Italy, as the grape's thick skin is rich in polyphenols. Two styles are produced: dry Montefalco Sagrantino and Montefalco Sagrantino Passito, made from dried grapes. The dry style shows an intense ruby red colour, sometimes with violet highlights that turn toward garnet with age. The nose is delicate, recalling wild blackberry and plum, with leathery notes as the wine matures. On the palate, the tannic structure is firm and dense, carried by a velvety texture that calls for long ageing and extended cellaring to soften. The Passito, softer and sweeter, keeps a certain dryness on the finish despite its sweetness and suits meditation drinking. The dry style pairs with grilled red meats, braised dishes and game, as well as aged cheeses; the Passito matches dry pastries and dark chocolate.
