Denominazione di Origine Controllata
Montefalco D.O.C. lies in Umbria, in the province of Perugia, around the town of Montefalco. The appellation covers the whole of the Montefalco municipality and part of four neighbouring municipalities: Bevagna, Giano dell'Umbria, Gualdo Cattaneo and Castel Ritaldi. The vineyards are planted on hillsides at altitudes ranging from 220 to 472 metres, on clay-limestone soils. The authorised grape varieties are Sangiovese and Sagrantino for red wines, and Trebbiano Spoletino and Grechetto for white wines. Montefalco D.O.C. is distinct from the neighbouring Montefalco Sagrantino D.O.C.G., which is reserved for wines made exclusively from the Sagrantino grape: it brings together red wines dominated by Sangiovese, in which Sagrantino plays only a complementary role, along with white wines made from native Umbrian varieties.

Montefalco D.O.C. Rosso and Rosso Riserva show a ruby red colour with violet hues. On the nose, the presence of Sagrantino alongside Sangiovese brings out aromas of red and black fruit, raspberry and blueberry. On the palate they are full-bodied, structured and lightly tannic; the Riserva, aged longer in wood, gains in depth and can be kept for several years. These red wines pair with roasted and grilled meats as well as game. Montefalco D.O.C. Bianco, based on Trebbiano Spoletino, shows a straw-yellow colour with golden hues, a fine nose of fruity and floral notes, and a dry, savoury palate; it is best drunk within two to three years of harvest and pairs with antipasti, seafood and cured meats. Montefalco D.O.C. Grechetto, made mainly from this native grape, offers a dry, taut profile with citrus notes, suited to an aperitif or to fish dishes.
