The Menetou-Salon appellation covers ten communes in the Cher department, north-east of Bourges, within the Centre-Loire vineyard region. The subsoil is made up of clay-limestone Kimmeridgian marls, the same geological formation found in Sancerre and Chablis, combined with limestone and clay soils. The climate, temperate with a semi-continental influence, is softened by the proximity of the Loire; the swing in temperature between day and night helps preserve the acidity and aromatic finesse of the grapes. Only two grape varieties are permitted: sauvignon for white wines, and pinot noir for red and rosé wines. Set slightly apart from the Loire valley itself, around the village that gives it its name, the appellation covers a smaller vineyard than its Sancerre neighbour, with production largely dominated by white wine.

Menetou-Salon produces mainly white wines, along with reds and rosés made solely from pinot noir. The whites, pale in colour, show aromas of citrus fruit, white flowers, pepper and mint; crisp yet round on the palate, they are best enjoyed young, within two to four years of the harvest. The reds display a ruby colour and aromas of ripe fruit, cherry and plum, evolving toward dried-fruit notes; their palate is supple, generous and lightly spiced, with moderate ageing potential. The rosés, more understated, develop aromas of white fruit and dried fruit, in a fresh and elegant style. At the table, the whites pair with fish, shellfish and warm goat's cheese salads; the reds go well with white meats, poultry and charcuterie; the rosés suit composed salads, grilled fish and lightly spiced cuisines.
