Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita

The Chianti D.O.C.G. appellation covers a broad hilly area in central Tuscany, spread across the provinces of Arezzo, Florence, Prato, Pistoia, Pisa and Siena. It is divided into seven historic sub-zones: Colli Aretini, Colli Fiorentini, Colli Senesi, Colline Pisane, Montalbano, Montespertoli and Rufina. It is distinct from Chianti Classico D.O.C.G., the historic zone lying between Florence and Siena that became a fully independent appellation with its own production rules. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, stony and well drained, low in organic matter. The landscape ranges from the cooler foothills of the Apennines to the milder areas along the Arno valley and closer to the Tyrrhenian Sea. Sangiovese is the main grape variety; it can be blended with other red and white varieties authorised in Tuscany, notably Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Grape varieties: Vins rouges : sangiovese, canaiolo

The wines of this appellation

Chianti D.O.C.G. is a red wine, produced in three main types: Chianti, Chianti Superiore and Chianti Riserva, the latter undergoing longer ageing before release. Its colour is a bright ruby red that turns toward garnet with age. The nose is intensely vinous, sometimes marked by a characteristic violet note from the sangiovese grape. On the palate, the wine is harmonious and savoury, with moderate tannins that soften over time. Riserva wines, more structured, develop more complex nuances and gain roundness as they age. This profile gives the wines good ageing potential, particularly for the Riserva. At the table, Chianti pairs with tomato-based pasta dishes, grilled or braised red meats, roast poultry and aged Tuscan cheeses; the fuller-bodied Riserva suits game and slow-cooked dishes.
