Ward

Durbanville is a ward of the Wine of Origin scheme, part of the Cape Town district within the Coastal Region of the Western Cape, South Africa. Recognised since 1989, it comprises around 1,400 to 1,500 hectares of vineyard, planted on rolling hills roughly twelve kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean. The soils are red, iron-rich Hutton and Clovelly types, derived from decomposed Cape granite and Malmesbury Group shale, with sandstone-based sediments appearing at lower elevations. The Mediterranean climate is moderated by the south-easterly wind known as the Cape Doctor and by coastal mist, both of which slow grape ripening. The undulating terrain offers a wide range of aspects and slopes. Sauvignon blanc is the most widely planted variety, followed by cabernet sauvignon, merlot, shiraz and chardonnay.

The wines of this appellation

Durbanville's reputation rests chiefly on its sauvignon blanc, the ward's most widely planted variety. Cooled by the ocean's influence, these wines show a pale robe with green highlights, brisk acidity and pronounced aromas of citrus, passion fruit, green pepper and freshly cut grass. Chardonnay, vinified dry, gives rounder wines with white-fleshed fruit notes. Red wines, based on cabernet sauvignon, merlot and shiraz, are structured with ripe tannins, showing aromas of dark fruit and spice, sometimes lifted by oak notes when barrel-aged. Some can age for several years in the cellar. The white wines pair well with seafood, grilled fish and spiced cuisine, while the reds suit grilled red meats, game and mature cheeses.
