DOC Aglianico del Taburno D.O.C.G. wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Aglianico del Taburno D.O.C.G. is produced in the province of Benevento, in Campania, on the slopes of the limestone Taburno massif. The production area covers thirteen municipalities in the province of Benevento: nine in full (Apollosa, Bonea, Campoli del Monte Taburno, Castelpoto, Foglianise, Montesarchio, Paupisi, Torrecuso and Ponte) and four in part (Benevento, Cautano, Vitulano and Tocco Caudio). Vineyards lie between 200 and 650 metres above sea level, on hillsides with sedimentary soils, marl-clay and calcareous, formed from the erosion of the Taburno massif. The climate, of an Apennine type, is marked by strong day-night temperature swings during grape ripening. The aglianico grape, present here at a minimum of 85 percent of plantings, may be complemented by other non-aromatic red varieties authorised in the province of Benevento.

The wines of this appellation

The appellation produces red and rose wines, made mainly from the aglianico grape. Aglianico del Taburno red shows a deep ruby colour, turning garnet with age, and aromas of ripe red and black fruit mixed with spice notes. On the palate it is marked by firm tannins and lively acidity. The Riserva version, aged longer and partly in wooden barrels, develops nuances of undergrowth, leather and spice, and has good ageing potential. The rose, more rarely produced, shows a pale colour, aromas of fresh red berries and a lively palate. The red wines pair well with grilled red meats, game and aged cheeses, while the Riserva suits slow-cooked dishes and meats in sauce. The rose is well suited to an aperitif or to light cuisine.
