Ward
Nuy is one of the wards of the Worcester district, within the Breede River Valley wine region of South Africa's Western Cape, under the country's Wine of Origin system. Located at the foot of the Langeberg mountain range, on the eastern edge of the Worcester district bordering the Robertson district, the ward stretches along the Nuy river valley. The climate is hot and dry, tempered by the surrounding mountain ranges; irrigation remains necessary for viticulture. Soils combine alluvial, sandy and loamy material, providing good drainage. White varieties Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Sauvignon Blanc grow alongside red varieties Shiraz, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Muscat de Frontignan and Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, known locally as Muskadel, for which Nuy has built a particular reputation within the Worcester district.

Nuy produces a range of still and fortified wines. Dry whites made from Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Sauvignon Blanc show freshness, aromas of orchard fruit and citrus, and a lively palate, best enjoyed young. Reds based on Shiraz, Pinotage and Cabernet Sauvignon are generous and fruit-forward, with soft to moderately firm tannins and notes of dark fruit, spice and occasional smokiness. The ward's specialty remains Muskadel, a sweet fortified wine made in both white and red styles from Muscat de Frontignan or Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains: amber or deep ruby in colour, with an intensely muscat, floral and candied nose, a sweet, unctuous palate, and good ageing potential thanks to fortification. Dry whites pair with poultry and fish, reds with grilled dishes and red meats, while Muskadel is best served cool, at the end of a meal, with dessert or blue cheese.
