Walker Bay - Hemel-en-Aarde Valley wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Ward

The appellation lies in the Walker Bay district, on the Cape South Coast of South Africa's Western Cape province. It is one of three wards in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, alongside Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge, and is the lowest-lying and closest to the Atlantic Ocean, with the valley running inland from the coastal town of Hermanus. The soils are derived from Bokkeveld shale, rich in clay and iron, with pockets of weathered granite in places. The climate is cool and maritime, cooled by sea breezes linked to the Benguela current, making it one of South Africa's coolest wine regions. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the flagship varieties, alongside Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, white Rhône varieties, Pinotage and red Bordeaux varieties.

The wines of this appellation

Hemel-en-Aarde Valley produces white and red wines shaped by a cool maritime influence. The Chardonnays are full yet mineral, with lively acidity, citrus and orchard fruit notes, and a touch of brioche from barrel ageing; they gain complexity with a few years of cellaring. The Pinot Noirs are elegant and silky, Burgundian in style, with fine tannins and aromas of red fruit, forest floor and gentle spice; they soften and deepen with age. Syrah and red Bordeaux blends yield fuller-bodied wines with firmer tannins and peppery notes. The white wines pair well with fish, shellfish and poultry in light sauces, while the Pinot Noirs suit duck, game birds, mushrooms or matured cheeses. The more structured reds match grilled or sauced red meats.
