Ward

Plettenberg Bay is a wine district within the Cape South Coast region, part of the Western Cape geographical unit, on South Africa's southern coast, in the area known as the Garden Route. It is one of the country's smallest and most recently recognised wine districts. The climate is a temperate maritime one: the proximity of the Indian Ocean limits temperature swings and cools the summers through regular sea breezes, without extremes of heat or rainfall. The soils are generally well-drained. The vineyard is dominated by chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and pinot noir, with a more limited presence of cabernet sauvignon. This oceanic freshness, more pronounced here than elsewhere in the Cape South Coast, sets Plettenberg Bay apart from neighbouring districts with a more continental exposure.

The wines of this appellation

Plettenberg Bay produces mostly white and some light red wines, along with sparkling wines made using the traditional method. The sauvignon blancs are crisp and aromatic, marked by citrus notes, white-fleshed fruit and a saline touch brought by the sea air. The chardonnays show a pale colour, a nose of white fruit and citrus, with mineral freshness and a taut palate. The pinot noirs are light ruby in colour, supple, with fine tannins and red-fruit aromas. The sparkling wines offer a fine bead, with aromas of white fruit and brioche. Shaped by the cool climate, these wines are made to be enjoyed young, for their fruit and vivacity. The whites and sparkling wines pair well with seafood, grilled fish and salads, while the pinot noirs go with poultry, salmon and fine charcuterie.
