Walker Bay - Bot River wines awarded at the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge

Ward

Bot River is a wine ward within the Walker Bay district, part of the Cape South Coast region in South Africa's Western Cape. The vineyards occupy a valley running from the Houw Hoek Pass down to the Bot River lagoon, home to around a dozen independent estates. The soils are made up of shale and Table Mountain sandstone, alluvial and fast-draining toward the river, which earned the area its Afrikaans nickname 'Oil Spot'. The climate is cool and maritime, refreshed year-round by breezes moving up from the bay and the lagoon. Unlike the neighbouring Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, better known for pinot noir and chardonnay, Bot River grows a broader range of varieties, with a growing share of Rhône grapes alongside sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc and cabernet sauvignon.

The wines of this appellation

Bot River produces mostly white wines, led by sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc, with smaller volumes of verdelho. Red wines made from cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, shiraz, cabernet franc, mourvèdre and grenache noir are gaining ground, alongside sparkling wines made in the Cap Classique method and port-style wines. The cool climate gives wines with lively acidity, moderate alcohol and a distinctive saline edge shaped by the proximity of the lagoon and the bay. The whites, taut and aromatic, pair well with fish, shellfish and summer salads. The reds, supple and spicy, suit roast poultry, grilled white meats and herb-driven Mediterranean dishes. The sparkling cuvées work well as an aperitif, while the port-style wines are best enjoyed at the end of a meal, with chocolate desserts or a mature cheese.
