Vino de la Tierra

The Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León designation covers every municipality of the autonomous community of Castile and León, in northwestern Spain. The vineyards sit on a high plateau (the meseta) with a gentle east-west slope, enclosed by the Cantabrian mountain range to the north, the Iberian System to the northeast, the Central System to the south and the Montes de León to the northwest; more than 98% of the territory lies above 600 metres in altitude. The climate, intermediate between continental and Mediterranean, brings long cold winters, short dry summers and marked day-to-night temperature swings. Soils vary by zone: humic cambisols in the mountains, calcareous soils on the páramos, acidic soils in the transition areas and alluvial soils along the Duero river. Broader than the specific appellations nested within it, such as Ribera del Duero, Rueda or Toro, this designation authorises a wide range of white grapes (Verdejo, Viura, Albillo) and red grapes (Tempranillo, Mencía, Prieto Picudo, Garnacha) among numerous recommended and authorised varieties.

The wines of this appellation

Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León produces the full range of colours and styles: young whites, rosés, reds, sparkling wines, semi-sparkling vinos de aguja, fortified wines and wines from overripe grapes. The young whites are fresh and fruity, with good presence on the palate. Rosés, especially those made from Prieto Picudo, stand out for their body and red-fruit aromas; some retain a light natural effervescence. The reds are powerful, with ripe fruit aromas, notable colour extraction, good structure and real ageing potential. The sparkling wines, a more recent addition to the region's tradition, are fresh and delicate, with an aromatic profile shaped by lees ageing. The fortified wines and those from overripe grapes, rooted in long-standing local tradition, show high alcohol levels and complex, sometimes oxidative aromas. Depending on style, these wines pair with cured meats and tapas for the whites and rosés, roasted meats and game for age-worthy reds, and desserts or mature cheeses for the fortified wines.
